Kailua-Kona is on the Big Island, which offers the largest amount of space on the islands to explore. From the ocean to volcanos you are sure to find something you love to do outdoors. The crystal-clear warm ocean waters that surround the Big Island are the perfect place to explore the large variety of sea life. It doesn’t matter whether you choose to snorkel or scuba dive, you will find a diverse assortment of fish and wildlife. However, if you do choose to scuba dive, rent from the Hawaiian Scuba Shack. They will not only offer you great gear, but they can direct you to the best shore dives or help you plan a dive from a boat.
When deciding to go for a hike on the Big Island, you have to decide whether you want to hike through rainforests, over lava beds, or along beaches. A favorite self-guided excursion is a hike to the Kona Coast from Kekaha Kai State Park. This hike takes you across lava fields and ends at a beautiful beach where you can spend the day swimming. For the less adventurous, there are several great guided hikes that take you through rainforests to waterfalls and other great island sites.
Stand-Up Paddle Boarding
In the past, the big thing to do when you came to Hawaii was learn how to surf, but today the newest and greatest thing to do is Stand-Up Paddle Boarding. People of all ages can swim out into the ocean, hop up on a board, and spend hours paddling around. If this is on your to-do list, be sure to visit Keauhou Bay where the water is calm, and paddle boarding is at its best.
If you live in a place where the city lights are bright, you often miss out on all the stars that fill the night sky. So when visiting Kailua-Kona, take advantage of the lack of city lights and take in the magnificent sky above. Take an evening picnic down to the beach and watch as the sun sets and the sky fills with lights above. Or head up to Mauna Kea where you can take a free stargazing tour.
A great way to explore the Big Island is to take a leisurely cruise on a bike, or even better, to take a bike tour. When you take a tour on a bike, you see things that you wouldn’t normally see while touring in a van or bus. You will experience everything the island has to offer, from its beauty to its serenity. A favorite tour is by Kupau Tours that takes you from Waimea to Waipi’o Valley Lookout. This tour is a relaxing ride that truly encompasses the magic of Hawaii.
